The first 4 modules contain the encoding mode of the Qr code, the encoding determines if it’s Numeric, Alphanumeric, Byte, Kanji(Japenese) and it will define the chunk of modules that we need to read at a time.įirst, 4 Bits from 1 to 4 contains 1000 since modules 1 and 2 are in Line no 1(1 Modulo 2 =1) so we must invert them so the result is 0100 so we have a Byte encoding so we need to read the next 8 Modules in order to define the length of the content.

Technically, the typographical set-up of the posters worked as a QR code that invited visitors to use their phone camera to unlock each portrait and, once unlocked, to be able to access the full story, the survivor’s voice and portrait at any time. This demanded the viewers’ attention and thus urged the importance of seeing the full story, to see through “alternative facts”. Based on quotes from the survivors, the aesthetics of the poster framework were inspired by censured documents with blacked out passages, in order to illustrate how easily stories can be fragmented and corrupted. While the presentation in the physical space was reduced to typographic posters in black and white, photographs and other background information including interviews were accessible via an AR app.
The exhibition “Fading Stories – pass them on” at Fotografiska in Stockholm portrayed 23 survivors of the Holocaust.
